Abstract

Diamond nanoparticles (DN) coated CNTs were synthesized using a sonochemical method. The CNTs, diamond nanoparticles and the CTAB surfactant was added to DMF (Dimethylformamide) in steps and magnetically stirred the reaction mixture and irradiated with a high-intensity ultrasonic horn. The Nylon-6 powder and 1 %wt. diamond coated CNTs mixture was dispersed uniformly to avoid agglomeration of particles using a thinky non contact mixing technique. The dried mixture was then melted in a single screw extrusion machine, and then extruded through an orifice. Extruded filaments were later stretched and stabilized by sequentially passing them through a set of tension adjusters and a secondary heater. The structure and properties of Nylon-6 filaments, coated with ND-CNTs nanoparticles were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The composite fibers which were of ∼ 80 μ size were tested mechanically and the ultimate tensile strength was found to be 270 MPa for ND-CNTs coated Nylon-6 filaments compared to 240.3 MPa for neat Nylon-6 filaments. The DSC results resembled the thermal stability with a melting point of 225.14 °C and recrystallization temperature of 194.53 °C for the ND-CNT coated composite fibers.
