Intuitive operation and pilot training when using marine azimuthing control devices - AZIPILOT

Abstract

AZIPILOT aims to improve, by policy and design, the safety and security of ships, considering the man-machine interface and the training of maritime pilots; specifically when operating ships equipped with azimuthing control devices. Azimuthing control has rapidly established itself in the maritime industry. While the industry has risen to meet this demand, rapid evolution has not allowed sufficient time for the propagation of knowledge throughout the different disciplines. Though the various sectors of the industry each have their own expertise, a lack of communication is both restricting progress and compromising safety and security, and much work is being repeated unnecessarily. To address this problem, AZIPILOT brings together specialists in Hydrodynamic Modelling, manufacturers of Marine Simulators, Maritime Training facilities and practitioners in Operation Practice such as pilot associations. The paper gives an overview of the aims and objectives of AZIPILOT and summarises the work so far. © 2009: The Royal Institution of Naval Architects.
