Abstract

Residual stress is one of the factors that cause fatigue and defects in critical components. Electromagnetic non-destructive evaluation is one of the most promising but challenging approaches for assessment of residual stress. Quantitative stress evaluation is essential for early failure prediction. Since the characteristics of electrical conductivity depend on stress, which is governed by piezoresistive effect. The peak value of difference signals of pulsed eddy current (PEC) is adopted to evaluate electric conductivity. The results of finite element analysis and stress experiment of AL5083 show that the amplitude of the PEC increases linearly with the increasing of the applied stress in elastic region. The result is helpful for using electrical conductivity as a measure of residual stress.
