Abstract

The use of the turbo principle is proposed to design a robust receiver for shallow underwater acoustic communications (UWC) for channels exhibiting spreading both in time and frequency domains. The proposed receiver is designed using an adaptive decision feedback equalizer (DFE) and bit interleaved coded modulation with iterative decoding (BICM-ID). Simulation results are carried out using the underwater acoustic channel (UAC), implemented by utilizing geometrical modelling of the water column. The multipath arrivals are assumed to be Rician distributed exhibiting long delay spread, which in turn results in severe frequency selective fading and intersymbol interference (ISI). The proposed receiver is approximately within 1 dB of the benchmark performance of a system employing DFE and turbo code. However, computational complexity and memory requirements are signifcantly reduced which are desired attributes for real time implementation.
