There is a growing literature on inter-organizational relationships between commercial organizations (often in the form of strategic alliances, joint ventures) and between organizations within the public sector and within the third sector (often in the form of multi-agency partnerships) and a consequent call for exchange of knowledge between those studying inter-organizational relationships in the private and public sectors . There are also very established literatures on contractual relationships and those based on more socially based relationships. However, there appear to be fewer studies looking at the theoretical, empirical and practical implications of complex collaborations involving both private sector organizations and the higher education sector, particularly where the relationships are based on a mixture of social and contractual relationships. This paper looks at the implications of this kind of collaboration through an in-depth case study of a particular collaborative project, paying particular attention to the way in which relationships developed between the parties involved.
