The purpose of this research is to assess the the operational feasibility of applying just in time (JIT) practices to a UK multiple retailers' reverse logistics (RL) function for waste packaging materials and multi-trip packaging The research adopts a multiple layer embedded single case study approach. The results indicate that, although empty trips in the network can occur, there would also be an increase in operational efficiencies resulting in substantial savings through the use of JIT. JITRL systems can provide significant benefits beyond this sector. The research contributes to the understanding of operational differences and priorities encountered at the initial nodes of a waste management and recycling streams, adding to both transport sustainability and network infrastructure development research. The practical effect is the creation of a new environment, “JITRL”, leading to potential cost savings for the network, derived from increased operational efficiencies and savings in labour costs.
