Abstract

This polyphasic study was designed to clarify the taxonomy of representatives of a commercially significant group of actinomycetes MAR 1 by our collaborators at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography who isolated the tested strains. The assignment of the representative isolates to a new taxon, the genus Salinispora, is significant as it represents the first formal description of an obligate marine, filamentous actinomycete. Two species, Salinispora arenicola and Salinispora tropica, were described using genotypic and phenotypic criteria. This is the first study to show that members of a formally described marine actinomycete taxon produced novel, commercially significant, bioactive compounds thereby showing that marine actinomycetes are a potentially rich source of pharmacologically active compounds. All of the taxonomic studies were carried out in Newcastle under the supervision of the corresponding author who also wrote the paper. The study was supported by the Natural Environmental Research Council Microbial Diversity Thematic Programme (grants NER/T/S/2000/00614 and NER/T/S/2000/00616).
