Abstract

This paper presents a dual stochastic finite-element based procedure for probabilistic analysis of composite structures. Among the many inherent uncertainties, we mainly focus on uncertainties in microscopic material and geometry properties, including constituent material properties, fibre waviness, and fibre volume fraction. The analytical development starts with the propagation of uncertainties at the microscopic material properties and fibre volume fraction to determine the effective material properties at macro or ply scale by using the stochastic homogenization method. Laminate theory is then used to quantify the uncertainty in the material behaviour at the laminate scale or structural scale. Next, the stochastic finite element analysis is performed to determine the stochastic structural responses corresponding to the uncertain basic variables. A case study of textile composite plate is conducted to illustrate the procedure for the probabilistic analysis of composite structures.
