Abstract

This paper presents a computational simulation approach for reliability analysis of composites in the presence of uncertainties in microscopic material properties. This computer-based methodology combines the state-of-the-art computational homogenization method with composite mechanics and probabilistic analysis to investigate structural reliability for designing sustainable composite structures. Stochastic structural responses are obtained by a stochastic multi-scale finite element method, which establishes the relationship between structural responses and microscopic random variables. The commonly used first-order reliability method and Monte Carlo simulation method are coupled with the multi-scale finite element method to conduct reliability analysis. Numerical studies are conducted to illustrate the procedure of multi-scale reliability analysis for composite structures and demonstrate the efficiency and correctness of the proposed approach.
