Abstract

Though few would deny that Western culture is organised around 'the visual', recent thinkers such as Ingold and Smalley have sought to redress this imbalance not by forcing hearing into the foreground, but by insisting on the ineluctably transmodal nature of human perception. Based on personal experience, and phenomenological reflection, this chapter discusses the ways in which vision can identify silences in the soundscape. From these experiential phenomena, the chapter then interrogates the epistemological aspects of the inter-relationship between hearing, sight, sound and silence.
