This paper discusses the potential benefits and challenges of greater engagement between researchers and practitioners in a specific aspect of accounting education research, preparing students for careers in accounting.While there is a consensus that the development of skills amongst accounting students is important to equip them for professional life, there are also unresolved issues. A review of the literature reveals differences between the skills that are reported as being important to employers and the reported transition experiences of graduate trainees, suggesting a gap between how skills are developed in universities and the workplace.Drawing from data accumulated by working with a group of accounting practitioners, the paper examines the potential contribution of research engagement to addressing these unresolved issues and improving our understanding of how to prepare students for careers in accounting. To assess the role of research engagement, the paper examines the perspectives of both researchers and practitioners.
