Abstract

© 2023 Carocci Editore. All rights reserved. The notion of «non-political classes» and its variant «non-political orders» have been playing a significant role in the modern historiography on the late Roman Republic and the early Principate. This paper discusses their emergence and development, seeks to probe their intrinsic validity and discusses their connections with ongoing debates on Roman political and social history.
