Abstract

In view of the British Society of Gastroenterology guidelines' suggestion that inflammatory bowel disease nurse specialists develop and lead teaching plans for patients (Carter et al, 2004), the authors offer their experience of developing and implementing a colitis education and support programme (CESP). Issues related to recruitment, the venue, group types and size, the length, number and frequency of meetings, the qualifications and desired attributes of facilitators, and maintaining the consistency and quality of the programme delivery and resources are discussed.
