Increasing fatigue life and reducing deflections in aluminium bridge structures

Abstract

A number of existing bridge strengthening methods are reviewed to determine a generic retrofit strengthening solution for aluminium bridges. Four techniques are considered, external post tensioning using carbon fibre reinforced polymers, IS panelling, carbon fibre reinforced polymer plate bonding and aluminium plate bonding. Aluminium plate bonding is found to be the priority method for reducing deflections and increasing fatigue life. For aluminium bridges the most effective way to increase fatigue life is the addition of diagonal members in each panel of the bridge. Further analysis of fatigue-critical sections identified an appropriate range of alternative members to improve fatigue life.
