In many recent publications, the finite volume method with shock capturing schemes has been used to solve the shallow water equations. The solution method is in great demand because of its ability to handle discontinuous flow. However, the shock capturing schemes are constructed based on homogeneous conservation laws and thus they are used for the solution of homogeneous part of the shallow water equations only. In order to add the contributions of the other terms such as bottom slope and friction which makes the equations inhomogeneous, alternative techniques are used such as the splitting method. However, these techniques are suitable only for particular problems and sometimes generate considerable errors. In this paper, a new algorithm is introduced which provides a solution for flow in a channel with a step on its bottom.
