Abstract

The paper describes the developments in insulated, compacted iron powder as a core material. The properties of the material are reviewed and its advantages and disadvantages when used for electromagnetic actuators are considered. A number of application examples are considered including solenoids, planar and spherical actuators, modulated pole structures and tubular permanent magnet actuators.
