The initial design of several demand paging systems has proved rather inefficient because of excessive paging. As a result, a large number of more or less ad hoc techniques have been proposed or used in an effort to improve the performance of these systems. The main part of the present paper is devoted to a survey of these techniques. The intent is to make clear the relationships between the various apparently separate techniques. The final section of the paper discusses their implications, in revealing the limitations, as well as the potentials, of demand paging.
