The paper presents a method of modeling a computer system design as it evolves, so that evaluation of the model and hence the proposed design can be made an integral part of the design process. The paper introduces the concept of ocncurrent existence, within a single model, of several representations of the system being modeled, at differing levels of abstraction. By this means it has proved possible to model a design before all decisions have been made as to whether a given component should be permanently available (e.g., hardware, or resident software), or made available dynamically as the need arises, by the expenditure of system resources (e.g., schedulers and allocators).
