This chapter examines art interpretation as a form of cultural cartography which works to construct notions, categorisations and discourses of art. Implicit in display is an imagined visitor capable of traversing the cultural map delineated through interpretation, but the nature and cultures of display and interpretation encourage certain statements to be made which have political consequences both for our possible understandings of art and for its accessibility. The chapter argues for a more inclusive cartography, proposing alternatives to the presentation of art as a body of products rather than processes and to the culture of reticence in contemporary art interpretation.
