Quantification of depth and classification of cracks using pulsed eddy current test technology

Abstract

Pulsed eddy current (PEC) test is a new development area of eddy current test technology. A pulsed eddy current system is designed. Through the experiments, the location of cracks can be determined by changes of the PEC signal peak. The crack depth information can be quantified according to the output peak value and the peak time of difference signal. With the purpose of overcoming the problem of low accuracy of PEC in the cracks classification, two main characteristic values including the peak value and the peak time and principal component analysis method are proposed to enhance the accuracy in classification of surface, subsurface and corrosion cracks. Comparing with two classification recognition methods, it is shown that the principal component analysis method has better classified performances. It provides an effective method for determining defect and establishing defect characteristic feature houses.
