Abstract

The purpose of this special issue was to offer a forum for dialogue between researchers and practitioners on the contribution of heritage to social inclusion. In recent years heritage institutions in the UK, and increasingly worldwide, have become acutely aware of the need to define themselves in terms of their social purpose, but to date there is little research that actually demonstrates this. This special issue takes us a little further along the road to increasing our understanding of the social role of heritage. The papers in this issue look both at the roots of the relationship between heritage and social inclusion and at the routes or pathways which heritage has taken in fulfilling a social role. Although much of the rhetoric on heritage and social inclusion focuses on the UK, there is much for other nations to consider, and some of the international case studies in the papers are testimony to the relevance of inclusionary principles in other contexts.
