Abstract

This article outlines research findings about current communicative practice, both good and bad, in the care of people with dementia. This includes research lead by myself, Chris Manthorp, a care specialist, and David Howells, an old-age psychiatrist, which identifies reasons why communication is not influencing care practice as much as it should. The research details the development of a communications toolkit for people with dementia, which has been developed in collaboration with the Alzheimer’s Society and a spectrum of health and care professionals and, crucially, people with dementia. The toolkit aims to link best evidence-based theory with best practice.
