Lübeck, the 'Queen of the Hanse' was the major hub for trade in Northern Europe in the 14th century. Yet next to nothing is known about the literary output accompanying this economic success. The chapter for a new handbook on medieval literature traces the developments in the city through its rich historiography, taking in the Black Death, the visit of the Emperor and the major gatherings of the Hanse. About the book: "This is the first literary history of medieval Europe to be attempted in English. Eschewing conventional, anachronistic organization by “national blocks”-- English literature, French literature, etc.-- it considers literary activity in transnational sequences of interconnected places. Its vision of Europe, and of movement within Europe is, we believe, of acute contemporary relevance."
