Abstract

Urban Myths is a practice based photographic research project that re-thinks an idea of American landscape within photography into a critical portrait of America today. It frames urban environments that have seemingly grown overnight irrespective of their natural environment. These visual manifestations of a drive to wealth are juxtaposed with landscapes we associate with an ideal of untouched wilderness that no longer exists. By juxtaposing these two contrasting spaces the series seeks to create as much a psychological geography of the environment as a document of a physical reality. (the failure of the system that supports them) Normal.dotm 0 0 1 306 1654 University of Newcastle 30 9 2144 12.0 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false Methodologically, the series is shot at night using long exposures, staging and artificial lighting. As a result the urban infringement on the natural environment is manifested in the recording of light pollution, be it through light trails, the residual glow of a city or trails of planes that hint at an invisible network that maps the world through flight paths. My use of long exposures treats photography as a time based medium where the experience of time is one of a condensation instead of a linear progression. Furthermore the work questions the convention of the photographic tableau, through new means of presentation.
