Abstract

The vapor phase transport and biodegradation of typical fuel compounds including volatile petroleum hydrocarbons and methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) was studied in a large scale field lysimeter representing a 2.3 m thick sandy unsaturated zone over a gravel aquifer.

Notes: This study has had an impact in the national (Swiss) media with more than 10 reports in newspapers and radio, reviving the debate whether or not MTBE should be replaced as a fuel additive (in Switzerland it was not, because the agencies argue that double-walled underground storage tanks in Switzerland don't leak).
