Abstract

This article uses Bourdieu's theory of fields to examine an area of research which has over the last ten years or so come to be known as "Latin Americanism". It analyses the debates over political engagement, theoretical novelty and the perspective of the researcher as examples of struggles within the field over what Bourdieu refers to as "the legitimate principle of legitimacy". Taking as its starting point John Beverley's 2011 book, Latin Americanism after 9/11, it examines the critical tendencies with Latin Americanism against the frame of reference provided by these three points of reference, suggesting that the struggle for hermeneutic authority has more to do with the struggle for capital within the field than with the reality of Latin American politics today.
