Rail freight transport traditionally moves low value high volume cargo such as coal, steel. There is a major shift in the demand of freight transport in Europe from raw material to be processed in the factory to semi-finish and finish low density high value cargo. Road transport has captured the new market. The European Commission White Paper 2011 targets that 30% of road freight over 300 km should shift to other modes such as rail or waterborne transport by 2030, and more than 50% by 2050. To achieve such target, the LDHV cargo will be one important area for rail. The current paper assesses the LDHV cargo demand in 2050 and its potential shift to rail. Also the paper identifies the requirements and attributes for such cargo transport.
