Abstract

It is against a backdrop of extended and global food supply chains that this research project is framed, as it looks back up the supply chain to producers who seek to circumvent or navigate away from these large and extended supply chains by selling their produce at Farmers’ markets (FMs) as a successful route of distribution for small producers. However, it is inevitable that classic diseconomies of scale and scope exist (Jones et al 2004; Youngs 2003; Pretty 2001.) which serve to act against resource effective distribution at Farmers’ markets, as well as a realisation that FMs, whilst not being random agglomerations of sellers are nevertheless, agglomerations which are likely to change geographically, seasonally and socio-economically.
