Feasibility study of Geothermal in Singapore

Abstract

The overly dependency on fossil fuel had it left a lifespan of 50 years. With increasing population and demand, other source of energy need to be taken into consideration such as geothermal energy, solar energy and hydro energy. Although the amount of energy that is being harvest from the renewable energy can’t be compare to the fossil fuel, it still is able to use the energy source and convert into electrical power supply to a small town. Singapore which is located in the Ring of Fire zone has a high possibility to extract the heat from earth crust that is suitable for geothermal energy production. In view of Singapore’s limited land size, geothermal power plant can be located off the mainland area. With the current power station producing all the electricity that Singapore is using daily, carbon emission is one of the main concerns that are facing by the government. By harvesting geothermal energy, it is more environmentally friendly and pollution free. In this paper, Pulau Semakau has been chosen for geothermal power plant. It will target to produce an electrical power supply of 55 Mega Watts for the industrial areas in the west of Singapore. Thus, this paper briefly covers the initial part of the planning and calculation and thereafter, the selection of different components come into played in order to meet the required power supply needed.
