The effect of chronic pain and stress in farmed animals is intimately linked to their welfare and has a major impact on productivity. When chronic pain and stress are measured through hormonal and behavioural changes, interpretation can be problematic because hormones are modulated by homeostatic mechanisms and observed behaviour can be highly subjective. In short, the animal gets use to it and will hide its distress from conspecifics to avoid being set upon. In this study we propose that heart rate variability (HRV) is a more robust and objective measure showing the impact of chronic pain or stress on farmed animal welfare.
