An experimental investigation on the surface morphology in micro-end-milling of glass

Abstract

Glass is a brittle and amorphous material. It can be used as the functional material for optics, electronics and semiconductor. However, it's difficult to machine glass with superior surface finish due to its high hardness and low fracture toughness. An experimental investigation was performed to identify the key factors governing the machining mode in micro-end-milling of glass. The results show that the feed per edge and axial depth of cut have main influence on the ductile regime milling of glass. The amorphous structure of glass may be another critical factor which should be paid more attention to investigate.
