Underground coal gasification (UCG) is an efficient method for the conversion of the world’s coal resources into energy. This paper is concerned with a feasibility study of the potential of deeply lying coal seams (>1200m) for the development of UCG combined with subsequent storage of CO2 for a site located in Bulgaria. A thermal-mechanical coupling model was developed with ABAQUS software to predict the cavity growth and the consequent surface subsidence. Material properties for rocks obtained from experimental tests carried out at the laboratory. Results showed that the developed numerical model has successfully captured the heat propagation and the cavity growth during the UCG process. Also, conclusions regarding the surface subsidence during UCG process are drawn. It is anticipated that the results of this paper can be used for the production prediction and optimization of the UCG process in deep coal seams.
