Abstract

This article charts the development of the World Archaeological Congress (WAC) from the confusion and conflict that surrounded the banning of colleagues from South Africa and Namibia from WAC-1 in 1986 to the situation in 2004 following the very successful WAC-5 meeting in Washinton DC in 2003. The article argues that, contrary to the opinion of some, WAC is needed in the 21 Century even more than before and suggests three key areas of work with which WAC needs to engage in the future.
