March 2017 is significant to the transport sector as it marks the likely triggering of the Article 50 Brexit process, the update of the Northern Transport Strategy and its prioritised programme of investment. This is likely to cover Northern Powerhouse Rail inter-modality and various schemes from three studies for the Northern Strategic Road Network – the Trans-Pennine Tunnel Study, the M60 Manchester North West Quadrant Study and the Northern Trans-Pennine Study. If we think about these first two elements, in the wider business environment, transformation is often triggered by major events. March also marks the second anniversary of the commencement of the national roll-out of the Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme which has attracted over 4,400 memberships to date. Dr Erica Ballantyne (Sheffield University), Dr Graeme Heron (Newcastle University) and Ian Vincent (AECOM) are undertaking a research project to assess the progression of the FORS scheme and determine the case for compliance schemes as transformative business readiness operations and quality management tools. Initially, the research focuses on the Northern Powerhouse / Transport for the North transport agenda.
