Abstract

© 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. Positivism and sociology have a common origin, and positivism remains a significant approach in sociology and the other social sciences. In positivist sociology, the scientific study of the social world is identified with empirical research, statistical methods, and often the pursuit of general laws of social life which can be tested against experience.
