Three orchestral movements exploring psychological processes that trace a continuity from a violent past in 1980s Latin America to the outward calm but inner turmoil of the rural landscape of Northumberland. ‘ordelfire’ takes the textural explorations in Fuego (1987) as a starting point and takes them further by treating them in a harmonically pliable manner, so that each texture functions not only as an argument in itself, but also as a harmonic step in a continuous progression. ‘mooncast’ engages with expressive notions of coldness and warmth, light and darkness, attempting to carry out a meeting of characters originally wide apart. ‘shapeshift’ seeks to synthesise disparities introduced in the preceding movements, by means of motivic integration in a rhythmically propelled high-energy melting-pot effect.
