| The initial discussion describes some differences anticipated in the manoeuvring characteristics of ships fitted with podded propulsors when compared to conventional arrangements. Model tests for a podded ship displaying course instability are compared to results obtained using pre-defined semi-empirical equations resulting in good agreement. An optimisation routine based on stability criteria is proposed and the resulting design charts are used to identify a stable design. |
