Comparative performance of ion exchange membranes for salt splitting

Abstract

The regeneration of acid and base from sodium sulfate by electrohydrolysis was investigated in two-compartment electrohydrolysis cells. Three types of commercial ion exchange membranes were compared: perfluorinated Nafion 117 (cationic), Pall R1010 (cationic) and Pall R1030 (anionic). The effects of flow rate, current density, salt concentration and temperature were studied. Flow rate and temperature had no effect on system performance. Performance was enhanced at elevated current densities. Pall R1010 was more effective than the Nafion 117 membrane.
