Abstract

Spinning Disc Reactor (SDR) was used to perform Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) free-radical polymerisation reaction in order to intensify reaction rate. Obtained results in terms of monomer conversion are presented in this paper. These results show significant conversion enhancements as compared to traditional batch processes. In order to understand this phenomenon we conducted a kinetic study of MMA polymerisation by carefully designing the experiments in order to assess all the important kinetic parameters equally. Acquired experimental data were used to conduct a modelling study by building a mechanistic model. Arrhenius law was applied to estimate activation energy (Ea) and it was shown that the activation energy in the SDR is lower than reported activation energies in a batch reactor.
