Abstract

In the very first issue of Geography Review, Professor Malcolm Newson wrote about rivers as systems, describing the way in which the different parts of the catchment function together as a whole. He advocated an integrated approach to river-basin management, rather than a piecemeal, localised approach. Twenty-one years on, this view now dominates: 'joined-up' thinking encourages sustainable management of water resources. This article will be of interest to all those who study hydrology and river-basin management at AS and A2.
