Abstract

This paper describes the development of a wireless sensor network to provide fine grain resolution, real-time environmental measurements for use in urban traffic management. Jointly funded by the EPSRC and Department of Transport, MESSAGE (Mobile Environmental Sensing System Across Grid Environments) project aims to demonstrate a dense grid of up to 300 multimodal sensor nodes, deployed on street furniture, vehicles and even pedestrians, to gather data by wireless, ad-hoc networking techniques. Here we describe the development of the sensor payload, the “mote” hardware, the communication protocols and how the data is fed into E-science tools developed within the project. Finally, the results of initial trials are presented and details of planned field trials and validation against precision instruments are discussed.
