Abstract

The inclusion of queer ideas and strategies into feminist/ gender and women’s/ lesbian and gay studies and activism has brought about new areas of concern and focus. Previously excluded or rejected sexual practices, relations and desires are now integrated into discussion. Acts of interpretation, cultural representation, performance, and transgression have become sites of political engagement. As well as bringing new topics to the table, queer ideas problematize existing feminist and lesbian and gay studies frameworks and priorities. In particular, the role of identity (as a woman or as a lesbian/gay person) as a source of culture, community and politics has been challenged and re-configured. As the centrality of queer ideas has grown, particularly in certain areas of the academy, questioning voices have emerged; feminists are key inquisitors. From a variety of positions their concerns centre on what might be displaced in the focus on queer ideas; in particular notions of structure, materiality and community. How are questions of cultures and identities being reconfigured? What political communities and strategies are becoming possible and impossible in this context? What kinds of theoretical connections and alliances are being made? What are the particular issues focused on? What and who is included and excluded? What kinds of relationships and separations may be present between academic activity and activism? This book will address these issues through an examination of the interconnections between queer theory and feminism, and the possible new directions in thinking about sexuality and gender that may emerge out of and at the interface of queer/feminist theory. This is a timely issue due to the growth in critiques of queer theory in many areas of the academy and the renewed interest in ideas and issues that had been represented as old fashioned or out of touch in queer debates.
