Abstract

A CD-ROM devoted to the History of the Hippocratic Oath from ancient to modern times. This constitutes the first attempt ever to document key events in the reception of each of the nine paragraphs of the Oath in each of the following historical periods: Antiquity, Middle Ages, Renaissance, Early Modern period, Modern period and Modernity. Each event is documented by means of a text and at least one illustration. Apart from this ‘path’, in which the Oath is, as it were, ‘declined’ through history, there are systematic ‘paths’ looking at the Oath as a whole under the headings ‘Art and Kitsch’, ‘Text and Understanding’, ‘Law and Injustice’, again in each of the six historical periods mentioned above. An introduction to reception theory exemplified by a musical composition of the Oath by Maurizio Kagel precedes the various ‘paths’. The CD focuses on recipients of the Oath rather than its presumed author or alleged content. A revised English version is in preparation.
