Abstract

SOLO PROJECT: Sunniside Gardens, Sunderland: Fold-up, a large-scale, temporary, site-specific architectural installation was constructed at Sunniside Gardens Sunderland during June/July 2008. This research project was implicitly directed at a public engagement with urban space promoting the central place as a forum, which encouraged a public discussion about the architecture of central urban housing and the concepts of sustainable urban planning. Reminiscent of an unfinished cut-out paper model, the full-scale copy of a Georgian terraced house was constructed using latest continental building techniques. Other outcomes include: ‘Fold-up’, an experimental short film and a series of long exposure photographs. Fold up was commissioned by Sunderland City Council and supported by Sunniside Partnership, RBau Sunderland, Newcastle College, South Tyneside College, DPH Construction, Arup, Arts Council England and ONE North East.
