CHAMP Precise Orbit Determination and Gravity Field Recovery

Abstract

In this chapter we outline the methodology in use at Newcastle University to recover the static and time varying gravity field from the CHAMP mission. Details are presented of the reduced dynamic process adopted within the JPL software GIPSY-OASIS II to recover precise ephemerides from the GPS code and phase data with orbit overlaps and tracking residuals used to quantify the orbit. The GPS orbital positioning is subsequently used to recover accelerometer scaling factors and offsets and thruster accelerations alongside the gravity field harmonics in the FAUST software. Estimations of these parameters are presented, as well as results from a study of the modelling of the thruster accelerations. For the latter, the use of constant accelerations across a single step in the multi-step integrator is investigated as a tool for modelling thruster misalignment and mismatch. Finally, preliminary results from an enhancement of the gravity field are presented.
