Notes: This work opened the discussion on an alternative approach to computational mechanics for structural optimisation. It dispensed with the idea of using existing finite element approaches, and was the first attempt at intrinsically linking the analysis and the shape optimisation. The results gave some clear indications about how best to introduce geometric non-linearity and led to the award of an EPSRC grant (GR/M77185/01).
