Abstract

This paper outlines an experiment set up by the Active Learning in Computing project at the University of Durham and the University of Newcastle . The aim of the experiment was to investigate the feasibility of students' projects being developed across sites. This work allowed students to utilise the expertise from their site's research-led modules and provided strategic coupling of cross-site student groups. The activity investigated the suitability of projects and the technology to support interaction across sites and the interest and fears of students. The first section of the paper provides the background and motivation for the experiment. The second part describes the assignment selected for the teams and section three describes the experiences and outcomes of the experiment. Section four describes future plans for developing and improving the cross-site experiment.
