Multi-Programming Systems with One Processor and Many Input-Output Devices

Abstract

A stochastic model of a multiprogramming system with one CPU and m I/0 devices is analysed in steady state. Formulae for CPU utilisation, average rate of job completions, average residence time are derived. The effect of 'bottleneck' devices and the possibility of using the model to study paging systems are discussed.
