Image-Object Retrieval in mixed Information Systems: Theory Behind the Practice

Abstract

The retrieval of image data in formation systems that are both global and open-ended cannot be advanced independently of the way that image-data objects are generated, processed and stored in those systems. A universal representation is needed compatible with other types of multimedia data and fully integral at the human-computer interface. Instead of imposing common standards, impossible in such an environment, a natural universal reference form is sought as a basis for understanding the general principles of image retrieval. To this end formal categories may be constructed of image-date objects and their complex structures. It is argued that all image forms are representable in the same general pullback category enabling the universal operations which can form the basis of all practical image activity.
