Abstract

The paper reviews the effects of distortion, its causes, procedures for minimisation and the impact of design. If the distortion can be predicted with reasonable certainty (once the necessary procedures to minimise the effects have been put in place) then new opportunities are created. The use of robotics will be made much simpler and there will be considerable savings in time and cost for conventional processes as well. Results of research into a method of predicting distortion are presented. The method is intended to provide a tool which will allow designers and production engineers to take potential distortion into account prior to design completion. The ability in the longer term to visualise the potential effects of distortion on a computer screen will give designers an opportunity to evaluate both alternative structures and production procedures.
